Week 4

This week we'll be looking more at writing and reading as far as I have understood from the assignments given. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of an exam week and today's exam must be marked for the day after tomorrow, and tomorrow another group's exam must be marked for Friday etc. but still I'm positive. There is so much interesting ahead so I'm sure there will be time for reading, as well. Actually, I love this opportunity to experience what it is like to be a student and not the teacher. And adapting the student's role in playing truant (late postings for instance) would certainly amuse my students. They wouldn't take health conditions into account.

I have been discussing the issue of being evaluated regularly all along this course, when he's wondered what marks I get. And if I remember correctly, he was the one of us who stated it's easier for both the teacher and me to know what I've learned or if I've learned anything. And I'm quite happy with that.

Wednesday 8:58 AM:

Good morning, folks! I just finished calculating the average marks of my students' word tests as they are one essential part of their course grade ( 16 students average:8.69) not bad. Now I'll tackle their essays, while supervising another group's exam.

So a nice day ahead again!

Learned on week 3

on week 3 I had the opportunity to read many reports written by previous course. I read them and finally posted something on Nicenet. One thing I must remember during my own project and future project report is how important and useful it is to write down comments along the way! And if I truely have learned that it will be at least a bit easier to do the final work!

The report I wrote about dealt with Romanian students I found many similarities and differences in our environment and situation. And it's always comforting to notice how students are almost the same everywhere.

It's 6:43 PM and the temperature is -13 C we're having a beautiful winter with a sufficient amount of snow!

When browsing the good sites, I got enchanted with the following:
there's everything! I am surely going to test it with my student and my son (12) to see if they agree with me, and why shouldn't they - we teachers are always right, aren't we.

Week 3 Friday

8:05 PM Finnish time:

This week has been extremely busy, it's unbelievable how much there can be to do and have done for one humble person. So today after school, I have read through quite a few articles on CALL Computer Assisted Language Learning and Oral/Aural Skills. It has been really interesting to read the posts of my international colleagues who have so good opinions on everything. I wonder where they get the time to read every single article and test all the web sites. But I have promised myself to try out at least a couple of them. I will also save the url's on my Delicious page. I'll be back after reading and testing.
PS. I had to ask the Internet about the difference between Oral / Aural, I used the search engine Answers.com and had quite a clear answer:
Aural refers to hearing.Oral refers to speaking. - Shame on me! -;(

Week 3 Saturday:

Now I have skimmed the reports written by former participants of the Web skill courses, my problem seems to be which to chose as they all have their interesting points. Many of them involve higher-level students than mine but considering the learning objects it doesn't actually matter. At this point I think I'll comment the report by Nadina Licolici, Lorin salagean Technical High School or that by Tendouinde Bruno Nikiema, American Language Center, Burkina Faso. or maybe someone else's. ;-)

What Americans Keep Ignoring About Finland's School Success - The Atlantic

Here's an interesting article, it's long but if you have time it's worth reading:

What Americans Keep Ignoring About Finland's School Success - The Atlantic

Week 3 Tuesday

15:54 PM in Finland
Oops, the days go really fast, I didn't even realize it was Monday and it went. But here I am again. I just came home from school and pushed away my son from the computer. Unfortunately, he had forgot to do some of his homework so it's one week with no computer games, how cruel can a mother be! But later he will go downhill skiing so then I'll have more time to concentrate on Deliciuous. I hope I will succeed in that. It is actually a problem: there are so many good web sites but if they are bookmarked on your computer only + you have a poor memory (as I have) , you can't remember where they were. I hope Delicious will solve this problem for me. My expectations are naturally(?) very high. After making dinner for the family I'll come back and see how it goes.

Week 2 Sunday, Learned quite a lot

What a weekend!
My sister and her family came for a visit and stayed over for two nights, not much working on this project but we had the ceilings in two rooms painted. All the time I worked in my mind, though, and finally half an hour ago I posted a plan (which I'm not very sure of).

During these two first weeks I have learned that I mustn't leave work to be done the next day or following night. I must be a poor teacher because I have hardly ever put on paper what I have planned to do during the following lesson. One reason might be that we have good school books and I trust the writers of them to have done their work well. I must try to improve myself and be a better teacher in this respect as well.

In the beginning of the week I visited Noodletools.com and I was really amazed on how much knowledge there is to found and how this knowledge can be organized. I'm referring to all different search engines. Until now I have mostly used Google as have my students when I asked them about this issue. It is important to be able to define your search.

The rest of the week I pondered on the main task. Describe my class and what I could teach to them using the waeb tools. Well, finally I posted it but I'm not very happy with my work during the second week. Maybe the next one will be better and more awarding one.

Not forgetting it's an exam week beginning on Friday:

Week 2 Thursday

What a foolish thing to imagine I would survive this course and my hardest period ever, not to mention my duties at home. Where can I buy a few more hours to my day!

Week 2, Wednesday

Yesterday I didn't have time to visit my blog, work work and work, next week Friday our exam week begins and after that (an exam a day for 6 days) the new period starts and , fortunately, I don't have so many lessons as in this one. But the problem (?) is that I only have lessons in Swedish. I must ask Robert how to proceed....

Today we practiced how to escape if we have a fire at school. Well, in my opinion the practise was not very efficient, as we had to tell the students in the beginning of the lesson that within half an hour they will hear an announcement about the practise, so therefore you have to go and fetch your jackets and out-door clothes! Let's hope there won't be any fire or other crises.

Now, I'm going to try www.noodletools.com and see what it offers. I don't want to go and read other participants' comments first. I want to make my own judgements first. Am I a bit silly?

Week 2: Monday morning

Hi,
it's 7.43 AM in Finland, I must hurry to school but I just came here to my computer just to check I've done everything I should have before leaving home. The temperature is -14 degrees (Celsius) so I must put on enough clothes. Fortunately it's only a 5-minute walk to school.

Have a nice day, friends!

Week 1, Saturday

Now I have taken some time to read through the blogs of the other members in this course. The result: I'm a bit confused; everyone seems to have clear and planned goals for this course, what they are going to do and how. But not me...

I don't even know if I have a group of English students during this period, in two weeks a new period will start and I noticed that I teach only Swedish then, maybe I just try to plan a course and put it into practice during our last period.

Well, our school year is divided in 5 periods each 6-7 weeks. At the end of each period there is an exam week. Some periods I have school from 8 - 15, like the current period but next period is easy (?) for me as I will have only one group, meaning three lessons (3 x 75 minutes) a week. Starting in February and then I hope I'll have more time to get to know everything or at least a lot.

Sometimes the students(?) wonder where all these English phrases come from....

Week 1: Beginning

It's half past eight AM, in a quarter I'll begin my first lesson for today. Yesterday I managed to create this blog and sign in to NICENET, nice!

I did it!

At least I think I managed in creating a blog
